46-6. Equal Access for Newcomer and Immigrant Students and Families
46-6.1. Obstacles to Volunteer Opportunities.
The BOARD shall work with the CTU/CPS Joint Standing Bilingual Education Committee to recommend ways in which the Board/CEO can minimize or remove obstacles to CPS volunteer opportunities for parents English Learners.
46-6.2. Assistance for Newly Arrived Families.
The standing Joint Bilingual Committee shall discuss and provide strategies to improve access for newly arrived families to STLS services, counseling, and assistance available through partnerships with government agencies or community organizations.
46-6.3. High School Graduation and GED Attainment Pathways.
The BOARD shall continue to implement pathways for GED attainment or high school graduation for late-arriving newcomers within CPS schools that include language support.
46-6.4. Training and Support.
The BOARD will offer training and support to school communities on welcoming and teaching newcomer students on a yearly basis.
46-6.5. Free or Discounted Language Courses.
The BOARD will explore opportunities to provide a free or discounted rate for members to learn language(s) of need at their school. ie: partnering with Community Colleges or Online platforms and share such opportunities with the UNION and CTU members.
46-6.6. On-demand Phone Interpreting Service.
An on-demand phone interpreting service, shall be centrally funded by the BOARD and made available to schools who require such services. This interpreting service shall only be used in accordance with BOARD guidelines.
